This is the final post about Feasting on the Christmas Story. If you missed them, you can go back to the first course Caesar Salad and Bethlehem Bread, the second course Savory Eastern Trio, and the main course Lamb in a Manger.

Celestial King Cake

Traditional Epiphany Kings’ Cakes aren’t usually available in December, so we make a version at home using a puff pastry and an almond filling. We make the filling using the following ingredients:

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

½ cup sugar

1 cup almond flour

2 eggs (1 for filling, 1 for brushing)

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ tsp almond extract

After it has cooked and cooled slightly, we use a stencil template (available in the Christmas Download Kit) to dust a trumpeting angel in powdered sugar on top, representing the heavens announcing the good news of the true King.

As we eat, we read Luke 2:8-14 (NIV):

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

We finish the readings with John 1:14 (NIV):The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Fun fact: in addition to the readings, we typically sing Happy Birthday to Jesus during dessert!

And there you have it: Feasting on a Christmas Story. Merry Christmas, everyone! May this Scripture-based meal bring your family closer together, and closer to Jesus.

If you want a full printable version of Feasting on the Christmas Story to more easily make it your family tradition, you can find it in my Christmas Pack on Etsy, complete with a convenient 1-page meal chart, Bible Verse cards, and a stencil template for this dessert course.
